The Power of Women: Why Having A Community of Female Support Matters More Than Ever

Perhaps you noticed that Saturday, March 8, 2025 was International Women’s Day and that March is Women’s History Month.  As an advocate for young women and women throughout our world, I cannot lose sight of the importance of women in my life. The women in my life have shaped me, uplifted me, and inspired me—and I know I’m not alone in this experience.

We often hear about “strong women,” but what does that really mean? Women are fierce, powerful, and resilient, yet we are also gentle, compassionate, and deeply emotional beings. For years, I equated strength with pushing through, handling everything alone, and not letting emotions slow me down. But I’ve come to see strength differently. True strength is not just about endurance—it’s about embracing our emotions, finding our voice, and lifting each other up.

The Women Who Shape Us

Typically I think of my late mother and my grandmothers around Mother’s Day and their birthdays.  This month I want to honor them and a few of their traits.  I am sure you can identify with these habits in your own life and memories. The women in my family were generous, kind, uplighting.  Sure they could be stern and demanding, but they got SHIT done.

Sound like you? It probably does or at least you can relate.

What strikes me most about these women is that they had a community of friends and others around them.  What is even more striking, they didn’t surround themselves only with people their own age—they formed bonds with women older and younger, drawing strength from shared experiences and perspectives.

Perhaps this is why, then, that I am so drawn to continue building a community of women. When we support one another, we shine brighter and make the world better.

What does Women Supporting Women actually look like?

In my mother’s time, friendships were nurtured over coffee chats, doorstep visits, and spontaneous gatherings. Women stopped by to borrow sugar or simply to check in. Today, technology has made communication easier, yet many of us feel more disconnected than ever. Text messages and Zoom calls are convenient, but they can’t replace the warmth of in-person connection.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to reclaim the power of genuine female friendships. Find ways to reconnect, whether it’s:

  • Hosting a casual get-together at home.

  • Joining a women’s retreat or empowerment group (like our Women Empowering Women group!).

  • Making the effort to send a thoughtful message to someone who might need encouragement today.

A quick text, a phone call, or a coffee date can make all the difference. Just today, I exchanged messages with three women who pray for me, encourage me, and lift me up—and I can’t tell you how much that fueled my spirit. When women support each other, incredible things happen.

Women Empowerment Quotes to Take With You

In the meantime perhaps you will find one of these quotes affirming and worthy of a sticky note on your March calendar or your desk.  Be bright and shine your light, it brings joy to others!

“The strength of a woman is not measured by the impact that all her hardships in life have had on her; but the strength of a woman is measured by the extent of her refusal to allow those hardships to dictate her and who she becomes." - C. JoyBell C.

“Women supporting women is the most powerful force for change in the world.” — Ntozake Shange

Final Thoughts: A Challenge for You

Let’s turn this reflection into action. Right now - yes, as you’re reading this - reach out to a woman in your life. Send a text, make a call, or even plan an in-person meetup. Let her know she’s valued, seen, and supported. Be the light that lifts another woman up today.

And if you’re looking for a deeper sense of connection and empowerment, consider joining our Women Empowering Women group or attending a future retreat. My door (and Zoom) is always open to you.

Shine bright, support one another, and let’s make this world a better place—together.
