How to Start Something New in Midlife: The Power of Simply Beginning
Why Winter Is the Perfect Time to Begin Again
Welcome to February. If you are like me, you often feel slow, stuck, or simply present this time of year. Winter reminds us that we do not have to move at the same pace we do when the sun is shining and the weather is warm. In fact, it is completely natural to hunker down and move slower — there are fewer hours of daylight after all.
When the recent apocalyptic-like storm covered much of the United States and had Texas locked indoors for over a week with sleet, ice, and freezing temperatures, I had plenty of time to think. Reflecting on 2025 and looking ahead to 2026, I realized how challenging the darker months can feel — and how important it is to choose intention during these slower seasons.
That’s when I chose my word for the coming year.
Choosing a Word for the Year: Why I Chose “Begin”
I chose BEGIN.
Sure, there are shinier, more inspiring words I could have picked. But begin felt right for this moment. Last year my word was AWAKEN, and it felt natural to grow from that place.
I don’t have to start perfectly. I don’t have to master anything overnight. I only need to begin.
Begin to pause.
Begin to write.
Begin a new hobby.
Begin the conversation before resentment builds.
Begin the habit before motivation appears.
And when I feel stuck — which happens often this time of year — I ask myself one simple question:
What can I begin right now?
There is no pressure in that question. Only possibility.
Reinventing Yourself in Midlife Is Always Possible
As I reflected over the holidays, I realized there are still so many things I have never tried. The idea of beginning something new — even later in life — feels exciting rather than intimidating.
I recently read a friend’s first novel, The Apex Between Us, written by Kim Estep. Watching her discover a new passion later in life reminded me that we can recreate ourselves anytime we choose. She has built a career, raised a family, and still found time to pursue racing and writing with electrifying energy.
She is proof that beginning something — anything that calls to you — can absolutely magnetize your life.
Trying New Hobbies in Midlife: What I’ve Recently Begun
So here’s your chance to ask yourself: what new thing have you added — or want to add — to your life?
For me, I’ve committed to five things in the past few months and I’m embracing them slowly.
Learning Mahjong and Building Community
Last fall I learned to play Mahjong. It took several tries before I felt comfortable with the rules, but now my neighbors and I play weekly. It’s not about competition — it’s about connection. Playing with women I barely knew before has been joyful and grounding.
If you’ve wanted to learn something new, what is stopping you?
Welcoming New Energy: Life With a Kitten
I’ve always been an animal lover, but recently we added a four-month-old kitten to our family. In fifty-three years, I had never raised a kitten. Millie has brought chaos, laughter, and endless energy into our home.
She reminds me daily that growth is messy, unpredictable, and incredibly fun.
Purchasing a Vibration Plate
Yes — I purchased a vibration plate. Social media convinced me. And surprisingly, I love it.
I stand on it for ten minutes most mornings. Starting small has been key. It energizes me and helps shake off that “stuck” winter feeling. Beginning a habit doesn’t require perfection — just consistency.
Practicing Golf With Intention
After attending another golf clinic with Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk, I committed to weekly practice. I used to believe I just wanted to play golf. Now I understand that practice — when it’s playful and social — can be just as enjoyable as the game itself.
Beginning Again With Writing
Lastly, I took a sabbatical from writing. Life was busy. Family, house, responsibilities — you know the story.
But during that break I realized how much I missed it. I’m not committing to daily writing or rigid goals. I’m simply beginning again. Some days I journal. Some days I finish a blog. Some days I jot a quote.
And tomorrow always offers another chance to begin.
A Simple Question That Can Change Everything
As you reflect on the past months or look ahead to the year, maybe you realize you’ve already begun something new. Or maybe there’s one thing you’ve been afraid to try.
Wherever you find yourself, ask:
What can I begin right now?
Beginning does not require courage in giant leaps. It requires willingness in small steps.
And small steps, repeated gently, have the power to transform a life. I challenge you to begin.
